Instructions for HSL Commuter Benefit

HSL Commuter Benefit is a benefit provided by the employer to the employee. The benefit can be in the form of an auto-renewing 30-day season ticket or a flexible mobility budget. You can use the commuter benefit on the HSL app. Once the employer has activated the benefit, the employee will receive an email invitation with instructions on how to start using the benefit.

HSL Business Travel is a product that employers can use to pay for the work-related journeys their employees need to make during the workday. The employer provides the employee with an amount that the employee can then use to purchase tickets on the HSL app. Once the employer has provided the employee with the amount of their choice, the employee receives an email invitation to activate the amount.

Student discount only on season tickets purchased with Mobility Budget

If you have been granted an auto-renewing season ticket as a commuter benefit, you cannot also get a student discount at the same time. The student discount is always granted for a fixed-term period and cannot be used in auto-renewing subscriptions.

You can purchase a student season ticket with the flexible Mobility Budget. You can ask your employer to grant you a commuter benefit in the form of the flexible Mobility Budget that you can use to purchase a student season ticket, provided that you are entitled to a student discount. If your Mobility Bugdet doesn't cover the entire price of the ticket, you may pay the remaining part with your own payment card.

If you have been granted a commuter benefit in the form of a season ticket that is renewed automatically and your student status is valid on the HSL app, the app will give the following error message:

In order to purchase a ticket at a student discount, students need to make changes in their information via the My Studyinfo of the Finnish National Agency for Education.

This is what you need to do:

Log in to the My Studyinfo service.
Select “Tietojeni käyttö” in the drop-down menu below your name.
Check that you have not authorized the disclosure of your information to HSL.
Log in again in to the HSL app.
Go to “More” > “Settings” > “My information”. Then select “Authenticate again” at the bottom of the page.

After this, the app will give you the option to purchase a season ticket using HSL’s commuter benefit.

Remove purchase limits

When you select “Activate” in the previous view, the app will automatically offer the correct ticket to you.

However, if you have set up a purchase limit, e.g. EUR 20 per day, you cannot buy the ticket and you will see a message saying “You have reached your purchase limit”.

Go to settings and raise or delete your daily purchase limit. After this, the HSL app will automatically offer you the correct ticket.

Please make sure that the selected payment method is HSL Commuter Benefit and the name of your employer is correct.
