Buying tickets using mobility budget
How to buy a ticket with mobility budget
Proceed to purchase a ticket as you normally would on the HSL app. Select HSL Commuter Benefit as the payment method. Once you have purchased the ticket, the price of the ticket will be deducted from the amount issued to you.
The remaining amount is always shown along with the payment method on the HSL app. You can also view information on your commuter benefit in the “My information” section on hsl.fi.
If your employer issues you a monthly amount, you will be provided with a new amount every month.
Commuter benefit is personal
The commuter benefit is a personal fringe benefit. You can only use it to buy tickets for yourself.
You can use your own payment card to pay for the remaining part of the ticket price
You can use the mobility budget to buy single, day and season tickets. If the amount of budget does not cover the entire price of the ticket, you can add your own payment card as another payment method.
When you no longer have enough budget for your HSL Commuter Benefit to pay for your ticket, you will receive a notification from the HSL app informing you that you no longer have enough budget to pay for your ticket. The app will also suggest that you use another payment method to pay for the remaining part of the ticket price. After this, you can choose the payment method and either add information on your payment card or select a payment card that you have already saved as the payment method.
It is not possible to use the mobility budget to purchase tickets in the form of an auto-renewable subscription. At the moment, you can only use payment cards as the payment method with the mobility budget.
Your mobility budget will be set to zero at the end of the year
The commuter benefit is a personal fringe benefit. The benefit is tax-free for employees up to EUR 3,400 per year. The mobility budget granted must be used by the last day of the year, unless a shorter period of use has been specified.
Any unused mobility budget will be set to zero at the end of the year, so remember to use your budget before the year ends. Your employer will grant you a new mobility budget for the next year. You will receive an email notification about it.
Starting from September 2023, your employer can also choose not to set the amount you have left in your mobility budget to zero at the turn of the year. In this case, you will be able to use the remaining amount after the turn of the year. You can find detailed information on when your mobility budget is reset in the invitation that was sent to you via email.
If your employer issues you a monthly amount, you will be provided with a new amount every month.
