How to use the new reader

New card readers are coming soon! The replacement of card readers is part of an extensive reform to make buying and using tickets easier and to upgrade our back-end systems.

Zone buttons in two views

The way tickets are purchased will not change with the new card reader. However, as the new reader has a smaller screen than the current one, the zone buttons are split into two.

At first, the card readers will only accept HSL cards. Later we will introduce contactless payment, which will allow tickets to be purchased with Visa and Mastercard.

Card readers replaced in phases

The new readers are installed in phases. According to current estimates, all 4,200 readers at stations and onboard vehicles will be replaced by the end of 2024. During the installations, there will be both old and new card readers in use simultaneously.

The pilot phase began with one new card reader that was installed on the Suomenlinna ferry pier. After this, new readers were installed at a few Metro Stations, on some trunk route buses as well as on one tram and train. Now the new readers are being gradually installed at other Metro Stations, trams, commuter trains and buses. Around 2300 new card readers have been installed so far.
