How to activate the commuter benefit

1. You will receive an email invitation

  • Your employer will send a message to your work email containing an invitation to activate the commuter benefit. ​
  • The message includes a confirmation code which you will need to activate the benefit. You will need the confirmation code only if you activate the benefit using a different email address than the one to which the message was sent.
  • The message contains the date when your commuter benefit enters into force.
  • You will also receive the message in case the benefit is set to begin at a later date. 
  • Click on "Start using HSL Commuter Benefit" to start the activation process.

2. The first page of instructions opens

Click on ‘Continue to log in’ to open the log in page.

3. Log in using your HSL account

If you already have an HSL account, log in. 

If you have forgotten your HSL account password, do not create a new account! Request a link to reset your password at hsl.fi or on the HSL app: 

  1. At HSL.fi, click on the person icon in the top right corner and click on -> Forgot your password?
  2. On the HSL app, go to More -> Settings -> Log in using your HSL account-> Forgot your password?           

If you do not yet have an HSL account, click on ‘Create an account’.  

4. Enter confirmation code

Once you have logged in using your HSL account, you will be asked to enter the confirmation code and the email address where you received the code. You will not need the confirmation code if

  • the email address tied to your HSL account is the same as the email address where you received the invitation
  • you have recently strongly authenticated with your HSL account

5. All done, the benefit has now been activated!

The mobility budget has now been activated and you can use it to buy tickets via the HSL app.

If your employer has issued you the entire amount for the whole year, you can begin using it immediately via the HSL app.

If you are issued a specific amount once a month, you will be able to use the first monthly amount the day the next amount is issued. You can find the date in question in the invitation that was sent to you via email.

6. Purchase tickets on the HSL app

You can now purchase tickets on the HSL app using your mobility budget.

When you proceed to purchase a ticket, you will receive a notification stating that you have been granted a commuter benefit. If you don’t get the notification, make sure that you are using the latest version of the app.

Proceed to purchase a ticket as you normally would on the HSL app. Select “HSL Commuter Benefit” as the payment method. Once you have purchased the ticket, the price of the ticket will be deducted from the amount issued to you.

Once the benefit is valid, you will be able to purchase single, day, multi-journey and season tickets for adults. If the amount of budget issued to you does not cover the full price of the ticket, you can use your own payment card to pay for the remaining amount. The mobility budget cannot be used to purchase tickets that are in the form of an auto-renewable subscription. 

The remaining amount is always shown along with the payment method on the HSL app. You can also view information on your commuter benefit in the “My information” section at hsl.fi.

7. Buying a season ticket with mobility budget

When buying single and day tickets with your mobility budget, you do not need to authenticate strongly. However, you will be asked to strongly authenticate if you wish to buy a season ticket with your mobility budget, in which case we will also check your home municipality.

You can strongly authenticate using your online banking credentials or mobile certificate.
