At stop or station

Each stop has a stop number on the stop sign that you can use to search for stop-specific timetables in the Journey Planner and in other digital timetable services.

The stop numbers have four digits. The numbers are preceded by a letter prefix indicating the municipality in which the stop is located: H for Helsinki, E for Espoo, V for Vantaa, Ka for Kauniainen, Ke for Kerava, Si for Sipoo, Tu for Tuusula, So for Siuntio and Ki for Kirkkonummi. 

The zone identifier, A, B, C or D, is displayed on the stop sign at each stop. The letter indicates in which zone the stop is located. The HSL area is divided into four zones, identified by letters A, B, C and D, spreading out from the center of Helsinki. You must a ticket for all the zones you travel through. Read more

There are digital displays at stops, terminals and other public places which show public transport timetables in real time. The displays tell how many minutes there are until the next bus or tram arrives. Digital displays at train stations tell the departure time of the next train as well as the stopping points of trains.

Please give a clear signal to the bus driver early enough. Hold your hand out until the bus indicates that it is going to stop. Giving a clear signal is particularly important when roads are icy or when it is dark. Wear a reflector to improve your visibility.

The metro and commuter trains stop automatically at every station.

If you are at a stop which has a shelter with an illuminated advertisement, stay inside the shelter in front of the light instead of going near the road in the dark. In this way, it is easier for the driver to see your signal.

Trams stop when there are passengers at a stop; however, it is not a bad idea to give a signal to the driver in particular if the stop is used by several tram routes.

When using an escalator, please stand to the right to allow people to pass you on the left. Hold children by the hand, do not allow them to ride alone.

Do not take large items of baggage, pram or pushchair, bicycle or pets on escalators. Use a lift instead.

In case of emergency, stop the escalator by pressing the emergency stop button located at the top and bottom landings.
