Continuous travel survey

We study the travel habits of HSL area residents through a continuous travel survey. The survey focuses on the use of different modes of transport. The survey helps us to assess the effects of the measures we have taken. These measures include, for example, changes to routes, timetables or ticket prices.

The most important indicator monitored is the modal split, i.e. the share of journeys made by each mode of transport. We publish the data quarterly.

The survey is based on travel diaries

Respondents document all journeys they made during the survey day chosen for them.

The survey examines, for example, how many daily journeys residents make, where people travel from and to, and which modes of transport they use.

The survey is conducted by randomly selecting a group of residents from Norstat Finland Oy's research panel and inviting them to participate in the survey.

All modes of transport included

The survey covers all modes of transport: car, public transport, cycling and walking.

We use the survey results to assess the impacts of measures we have taken, prepare the Helsinki Region Transport System Plan, and manage and develop traffic forecast models.

Also other parties involved in regional transport planning and decision-making use the results.
