HSL public transport over Christmas and New Year 2024

There will be additional night services on New Year’s Eve 31 December. On New Year’s Day, 1 January, a Sunday service will operate.

Public transport in the Helsinki region will operate to a special timetable during Christmas and New Year. All up-to-date routes and timetables are available in the Journey Planner.

On Christmas Eve, 24 December, a Sunday service will operate

On Christmas Eve, Tuesday 24 December, a Sunday service will operate.

  • Bus 24X will have additional services to the Hietaniemi cemetery.
  • Trams will operate a less frequent service after 4pm. Trams will run approximately every 20 minutes.
  • R, T and Z commuter trains towards Riihimäki and Lahti will operate a less frequent service. Moreover, there will be timetables changes for H trains from 4pm.
  • U line buses will operate a Saturday service until the afternoon, after which they will operate a reduced service.

On Christmas Day, 25 December, a Sunday service will operate, and services will begin later than usual

On Christmas Day, Wednesday 25 December, a Sunday service will operate from approximately 11am.

  • Trams will operate a less frequent service and run approximately every 20 minutes. Trams will begin operating at approximately 11am. However, trams 7 and 9 will begin running from the Central Railway Station to the West Terminal already after 9am.
  • Commuter trains will operate a reduced service on Christmas Day morning. From approximately 11.30am, the trains will operate a Sunday service.
  • U line buses will operate a reduced service.

On Boxing Day, 26 December, a Sunday service will operate

On Boxing Day, Thursday 26 December, a Sunday service will operate.

Reduced service between Christmas and New Year

The Metro, light rail and trams in downtown Helsinki will operate a slightly reduced service between Christmas and New Year.

  • The Metro will operate a reduced service on 23 December, 27 December, 30–31 December and 2–3 January. The Metro services will run every 7.5 minutes on lines M1 and M2, meaning that the Metro will run every 3–4 minutes between Itäkeskus and Tapiola.
  • Light rail 15 will operate a reduced service and run approximately every 10 minutes on 23 December, 27 December, 30–31 December and 2–3 January.
  • Trams will operate a reduced service and run approximately every 12 minutes on 27 December, 30–31 December and 2–3 January. Tram routes 1T and 8T will run to the West Terminal. No trams will serve the terminus of tram route 1 in Eira from 24 December to 6 January. Night tram 9N will operate on 27 December, 31 December and 3 January.

Additional night services on New Year’s Eve 31 December and Sunday service on New Year’s Day 1 January

On New Year’s Eve, Tuesday 31 December, a Friday service will operate. 

  • The Metro will run approximately two hours later than usual at night. The Metro will run every 15 minutes on both lines until the end of service, meaning that the Metro will run every 7.5 minutes between Itäkeskus and Tapiola.
  • I and P trains will run approximately two hours later than usual. Additionally, commuter trains will have additional carriages from 10pm to 5am.
  • Bus routes will also have additional services.
  • On New Year’s Eve, 31 December, tram routes in downtown Helsinki and buses to/from Elielinaukio will be diverted between 9.45pm and 2am due to New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Kansalaistori Square. Buses normally running to Elielinaukio will run to Kamppi, and tram routes 1T, 4, and 10 will be diverted in Töölö. More information on the diversion routes can be found in our separate release.

On New Year’s Day, 1 January, a Sunday service will operate.

On Epiphany, 6 January, a Sunday service will operate

On Sunday 5 January, a normal Sunday service will operate. In addition, buses and trains will operate additional night services.

On Epiphany, Monday 6 January, a Sunday service will operate.
