Changes to Metro services in Helsinki city center 3 June–1 September 2024
There will be major changes to the Metro services in the summer of 2024. The Central Railway Station Metro Station will be closed for three months from the beginning of June to the beginning of September. During the station closure, the Metro will not run through the city center. In addition, the Metro will run less frequently than normal due to the work. At the same time, there will also be changes to the Metro services in East Helsinki.
Things to take note of
The Central Railway Station Metro Station will be closed from 3 June to 1 September
The Metro will not serve the Central Railway Station due to fire safety work. The Central Railway Station Metro Station will be out of use for the duration of the work. However, businesses at the station and the station tunnel will be open as usual. In addition to improving fire safety, the work includes enhancing the appearance of the station. The station will reopen on 2 September.
Trains terminate at the University of Helsinki and Kamppi stations
The Metro will only run between the University of Helsinki and East Helsinki and between Kamppi and Kivenlahti. The Metro will run every five minutes in the direction of East Helsinki (to the east of Itäkeskus every 10 minutes) and every six minutes in the direction of Espoo (off peak-peak every 7.5 minutes). In Espoo, all trains will run to Kivenlahti. Normal service frequency will resume on 2 September when the Central Railway Station Metro Station reopens.
Travel through the city center by tram
Tram 9 and Metro replacement tram 9B run between the Hakaniemi, University of Helsinki, Central Railway Station and Kamppi Metro Stations. The stations also link with other tram routes.
Walk through the city center
The University of Helsinki and Kamppi stations are about a one-kilometer walk apart.
Travel through the city center by bike or city bike
City bikes are one alternative for the closed sections of the Metro. If you are taking your bike on the Metro, we recommend that you use the Hakaniemi and Ruoholahti stations as there are more lifts at these stations than at the Kamppi or University of Helsinki stations.
The Journey Planner is there to help

Going to East Helsinki or taking the train or tram?
At the University of Helsinki
At the University of Helsinki Metro Station, you can change to tram 9 or tram 9B (destination Länsiterminaali, West Terminal) in the direction of Kamppi at the “Kaisaniemenkatu” stop (bay 2) located directly above the station.
Exit the station to Kaisaniemenkatu via exit A, i.e. take the escalator up next to the K-supermarket and the ATMs. Alternatively, you can use the lift next to the escalators.
The stop is right in front of the station entrance on the other side of the street (on the Kinopalatsi side).
