Instructions for Helsinki and Espoo city bikes
The bike system in Helsinki and Espoo is not compatible with the system in Vantaa. You cannot mix bikes from the two systems. These instructions apply to the city bikes in Helsinki and Espoo.
Instructions for Helsinki and Espoo city bikes
- Choose a pass: a daily pass costs €5, a weekly pass €10 and the whole season €35. You can have only one valid pass at a time for one email address.
- In order to register, you need an HSL account. If you do not have an HSL account, you can easily create one using your email address. You need to confirm the HSL account using a code sent to your email. Read more about the HSL account
- Choose a four-digit PIN code, fill in your contact details and agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. With a daily pass, you can get access to 1–4 bikes.
- Enter your payment card details. You can use Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and JCB cards.
- Once you have registered, you will receive your personal cyclist ID, which you will need, along with your PIN code, to pick up a bike at a station.
How to register as a city bike user
- Go to a bike station. You can see the locations of bike stations and available bikes in the Journey Planner.
- Unlock a bike by entering your cyclist ID and PIN code on the device in the middle of the handlebar. If you wish, you can replace the cyclist ID with your HSL card using the device. For more information, see Frequently asked questions.
- Adjust the seat and start riding.

- You can make as many 60-minute bike rides as you like.
- Always ride on cycle paths or roads, where no cycle path is available. Walk your bike on the pavement.
- If you use a bike for more than 60 minutes at a time without docking it, you will be charged one euro for each additional 30 minutes.
- Return the bike to a bike station within five hours to avoid the €80 delay fee.
Locking the city bike for a break
- Return the bike at any city bike station in Helsinki or Espoo.
- Once you have docked the bike and received a confirmation that the bike was successfully returned, you will no longer be responsible for the bike.
- You can return the bike to a full station, if the “Return” option is available on the bike screen. Lock the bike by pulling the cable out from the handlebar and wrapping it around another city bike at the station, and snap it into place in the slot on the front fork of the bike you are returning.
