Student discount

If you live permanently in the HSL area and your are a full-time student, you can buy season tickets at a 40% discount using the HSL app. The discount does not apply to value, single and zone extension tickets.

Student tickets on the HSL app

You can easily get the student discount on season tickets you purchase via the HSL app. You can activate the discount yourself on the HSL app when your enrollment information has been updated in the My Studyinfo service.

The student discount also applies to season tickets purchased with the HSL card. The discount entitlement must be updated on your HSL card at a service point. Remember to bring with you the required documents.

If you are studying in an upper secondary school (such as a vocational school or a high school) and you have received a school transport subsidy from Kela, you can purchase an HSL ticket conveniently using the HSL app or visit a service to get the ticket on your HSL card. Am I entitled to the discount?

You are entitled to the student discount if you meet the following criteria:

You are aged 18 years or over.
You live permanently in the HSL area.
You are studying in a Finnish comprehensive school, upper secondary school, folk high school, vocational school, university of applied sciences or university.
You are studying on a full-time basis and the duration of the studies is at least one school/academic year (8 months). Vocational qualification studies, high school studies and university degree studies are considered full-time, other vocational studies are full-time if you study for 25 hours a week or more.
Under normal circumstances, your studies lead to a qualification, a degree or a basic education certificate.
Also students attending voluntary additional basic education (10th grade), preparatory vocational education and preparatory studies for general upper secondary (TUVA), training preparing students for work and independent living (TELMA), and those receiving preparatory education for basic education are entitled to the discount.

You are not entitled to the student discount if you meet one of the following conditions:

You are under 18 years of age.
You live permanently outside the HSL area or your school or educational institution is not located in Finland.
Your studies are not full-time.
You are a postgraduate university student studying for a licentiate or a doctoral degree. NB! The degree of Licentiate in Medicine is a basic university degree, and medical students are thus entitled to the discount.
You are complementing your degree or taking studies, such as pedagogical studies, to gain competence or qualifications.
You are studying in a liberal adult education program.
You are in apprenticeship training or on an internship.

Activating your student discount

You can activate the discount yourself on the HSL app. If you are using the HSL card, you must visit a service point to update your card.

Student tickets on the HSL app

You can buy student tickets using the HSL app if

You are studying at a university or an upper secondary school,
You have a Finnish personal identity code,
You have a permanent address in one the HSL municipalities, and
You have online banking credentials for strong authentication.

You can buy 14-day and 30-day season tickets using the app.

When buying a season ticket on the HSL app for the first time, you must strongly authenticate using your online banking credentials or a mobile certificate. The authentication allows HSL to access your home municipality information, which determines the price of your ticket.

Your student enrollment status and its duration are verified in the My Studyinfo service of the Finnish National Agency for Education.

Tips: verification of enrollment information on the HSL app

If the discount entitlement does not show on the HSL app, you can try the following steps to fix the problem.

1) Log into the Finnish National Agency for Education’s My Studyinfo service at https://opintopolku.fi/oma-opintopolku/ and check that you have authorized the disclosure of your information to HSL and that your enrollment information for the year have been updated.

Select “My studies” at the top of the page.
Select your current degree program in the drop-down menu.
It is not enough that your status is active (“aktiivinen”); select “lisätiedot” (additional information) to see your enrollment status for the term (“Lukuvuosi-ilmoittautuminen”).
Remember also to check in the drop-down menu, under your name, that you have agreed to the disclosure of your information in the “Tietojeni käyttö” section.

2) If your information in the My StudyInfo service is up to date,

log out from the HSL app
restart your phone (to clear the cache, this is important)
re-log in using your HSL account.
In some rare cases, you might need to remove the app from your device and reinstall it before restarting your phone.

Please note that when you log out of the app or remove the app from your phone, you will loose any valid single or day tickets. Thus, it is advisable to wait for your ticket to expire before logging out or removing the app from your phone.

3) Go to ‘Tickets’ and select 30-day ticket. You will have to re-authenticate.

If you have already authenticated and the process does not start automatically, you can re-authenticate by going to More>Settings>My information and click on “Authenticate again” at the bottom left corner. This may be useful also in the future if your address changes or if there are changes to your study information.

4) If strong authentication fails, you can re-authenticate at our website, https://www.hsl.fi. Go to My information > HSL account > Re-authenticate (at the bottom of the page)

Student tickets on the HSL card

If you are getting a student HSL card from a service point, please bring with you:

a Finnish ID document
a student discount ticket application form dated not earlier than three months before your visit to the service point, with the stamp and signature of the educational institution (link to the form below). A copy or photograph of the form is not acceptable. OR
a valid student card with a current term sticker or stamp.
The following student cards are accepted: A blue SYL student card, a blue SAMOK student card, a student card of OSKU ry, the Union of Finnish Upper Secondary School Students, Finlands Svenska Skolundgdomsförbund rf (FSS rf), an AMK student card or an ISIC International Student Identity Card with a logo of SYL, SAMOK or SLL and a current term sticker on it, or a digital FRANK student card issued by one of the above student associations; digital student cards issued by SLICE, PIVO and Tuudo.
NB! The student card of the National Union of Vocational Students in Finland, SAKKI ry, is not accepted.

The discount entitlement can only be updated on your HSL card if there is no code for your school in the My Studyinfo service; you are enrolled in degree-oriented education in a folk high school, in preparatory education or in preparatory education for basic education or in voluntary additional basic education; you are an exchange student in Finland and you do not have a Finnish personal identity code; or you use a service voucher or commuter vouchers to pay for your ticket. In such cases, no service fee will be charged for updating the customer group. Read more

Once your customer group has been updated at a service point, you can buy student season tickets on your HSL card at all sales points, at full-range ticket machines as well as using our online card service.

Forms

Discount tickets for exchange students

If you are aged 18 years or over, you are entitled to a student discount (40% on season tickets).

If you are under 18 years of age, you can buy child tickets (discount 50%).

Exchange students can only get student discount on the HSL card. To get the discount, you need to visit a service point.

You are entitled to the student discount if you meet the following criteria:

You are temporarily living in the HSL area (for up to two years).
You are studying in a comprehensive school, upper secondary school, folk high school, vocational school, university of applied sciences or university in the HSL area.
You are studying on a full-time basis and the studies lead to a qualification or degree in your home country.

You are not entitled to the student discount if you meet one of the following conditions:

You are a postgraduate exchange student studying for a licentiate or a doctoral degree.
NB! The degree of Licentiate in Medicine is a basic university degree, and medical students are thus entitled to the discount.
You are in apprenticeship training or on an internship.

You can get an exchange student HSL card from a service point. Please bring with you:

An official ID document with photograph (an official ID card, passport, European driver’s license)
Exchange student discount ticket application form.

Print out the form, fill it in and ask your educational institution to sign and stamp the form.

Student tickets via MaaS services

You can buy a student mobile season ticket using a service provided by a MaaS operator if

you are aged 18 or over,
you have a Finnish personal identity code,
you have a permanent address in the HSL area, i.e. in Helsinki, Espoo, Kauniainen, Vantaa, Kerava, Tuusula, Sipoo, Kirkkonummi or Siuntio, and
you have an HSL account and online banking credentials for strong authentication.

Before you can buy a student season ticket using a mobility app, you must authorize the Finnish National Agency for Education to disclose your enrollment information and information about your educational institution to HSL via the My Studyinfo of the Finnish National Agency for Education:

Log in to the My Studyinfo serviceusing strong authentication.
Give the Finnish National Agency for Education permission to disclose your information to HSL.
Based on the information provided by the Finnish National Agency of Education, HSL will determine whether you are entitled to a student season ticket or not.

Your consent to the disclosure of your information will apply both to student mobile tickets purchased via HSL’s ticket sales channels and to tickets purchased via MaaS operators.  

In addition, you must authorize the MaaS operator to buy personal HSL tickets on your behalf.In the MaaS service, you will be directed to authorize HSL to buy personal tickets on your behalf. This is called authorization to act on behalf of another person.

Log in using your HSL account and strong authentication. Strong authentication allows HSL to access your home municipality information.

Your authorization to the MaaS service provider and your home municipality will be stored with your HSL account, along with information on whether you are entitled to a student season ticket.

HSL will not disclose the information provided by the Finnish National Agency of Education to MaaS service providers. The MaaS service provider only sees that the customer, who has issued the authorization to act on their behalf, is entitled to purchase student-priced mobile season tickets.

If you want to withdraw or amend your consent to the disclosure of information to HSL, you can do that on the My Studyinfo service.

What to do if you have problems with the purchase of tickets

Student enrollment information is not always available electronically. If you are unable to confirm your discount entitlement via the My Studyinfo service, you can visit a service point to update the discount entitlement on your HSL card and then buy a discount season ticket on your card. Use the sales point search at hsl.fito find the contact details of HSL service points.

If you have problems with purchasing your ticket, you should enroll with your institution and then check your enrollment information via the My Studyinfo service using strong authentication.
