Many changes to bus routes in West Helsinki and in the central city area from 16 August. Three new trunk bus routes will start, changes to crosstown services
There will be many changes to bus routes in West Helsinki and in the central city area at the start of the autumn timetable season, 16 August. New trunk bus routes 20, 30 and 40 will start. Crosstown bus routes 56, 57 and 59 will be strengthened and revamped route 52 will provide frequent crosstown service between West Helsinki and Otaniemi. Transport links to the new Postipuisto area will improve.
The changes are based on the Helsinki Crosstown Route Network Development Plan and Route Network Plan for Haaga, completed in spring 2019.
The changes are explained below by area. The new routes and timetables will be available in the Journey Planner in mid-July. PDF timetables are already available in the printable timetables.

The southern section of route of bus 24 from Kamppi to Merikatu will be withdrawn to deliver cost-savings. The new section of route is Kamppi terminal – Hietaniemi – Seurasaari. The operating hours will be shortened. During the summer months, the bus will run more frequently with longer operating hours.
Trams 2, 3 and 10 as well as the new trunk bus routes 20 and 30 will replace the southern section of route of bus 24, which will be withdrawn. Read more about changes to bus route 24 in the Frequently asked questions.
A new route, 25, Kamppi terminal – Mechelininkatu – Munkkivuori – Pajamäki, will be introduced to replace partially withdrawn route 14. The new bus route will run every 20 minutes. It will provide new links to Töölö and to the western part of the Meilahti Hospital area. The route will also replace the service of route 24, whose operating hours are shortened.

A new route, 25, Kamppi – Mechelininkatu – Huopalahdentie – Pajamäki, will provide new links to the western parts of Töölö. The bus will depart from the Kamppi terminal, allowing passengers to wait for the bus comfortably indoors.
Bus route 52 will be turned into a frequently running crosstown route serving western Helsinki. The route will provide new, direct transport links, for example, to Kannelmäki (Kaari shopping center). The new route is Otaniemi – Munkkiniemi – Huopalahti station – Kannelmäki – Kuninkaantammi. The new route route will run every day and it will replace the weekday bus service 552, which will be withdrawn.
In Otaniemi, the new route 52 will run via Miestentie and Vuorimiehentie to Teekkarikylä to provide improved interchange at the Aalto University Metro Station.
Neighborhood route 33 will be rerouted to run from Munkkiniemi (Ritolehto) via Laajalahdentie and Ulvilantie to the Munkkivuori shopping center to replace the old route 52 on Ulvilantie. The bus will no longer serve Tarvo. The route was due to be extended to Etelä-Haaga, but the extension will not be implemented to save costs. Neighborhood route 33 will no longer call at the Saga care home, which will in the future be served by neighborhood route 34.
Bus route 57 (Munkkiniemi – Ruskeasuo – Viikki – Kontula) will start running more frequently.
The service frequency and operating hours of neighborhood routes 31 and 32 serving Haaga will be reduced to save costs.

The buses are orange in color and they have open fare collection, which means passengers can board the buses through all doors. At weekends, route 30 will run nearly round the clock.
Bus route 51 will be withdrawn. It will be replaced by a new crosstown weekday service, 53, (Arabia – Oulunkylä – Pohjois-Haaga – Pitäjänmäki – Uusmäki) and by rerouted bus 59. The terminus of bus route 59 will move from Pajamäki to Malminkartano. The route will start running more frequently and it will also run on Sundays.
A new bus route, 25, will replace the withdrawn services of bus routes 14 and 59 to Pajamäki. The bus will run from the Kamppi terminal via Mechelinkatu, Paciuksenkatu and Huopalahdentie to Pajamäki. Bus services in Pajamäki will be reduced but there are very good transport links from the Tali allotment garden bus stop. For example, three trunk bus routes serve the stop. Bus route 38 (Elielinaukio – Uusmäki) will be withdrawn. It will be replaced by the new route, 53, which provides good interchange in the direction of the city center with trains or two trunk bus routes in Pitäjänmäki. The route also links with the Ring Rail Line at Pohjois-Haaga station. The main transport link serving Uusmäki is bus route 203 via Leppävaara. Bus route 59 serves journeys from Konala to Ruskeasuo and Pasila.
The route of bus 37 (Kamppi – Malminkartano) will not change. The bus will run later than before, at weekends until about 4am.
The service frequency and operating hours of neighborhood routes 36 and 201 will be reduced to save costs.

A new trunk bus route, 40, will replace the current routes 40 and 43. The trunk route will follow the route of the current bus 40 until Pohjois-Haaga, but from there, it will continue to Kannelmäki and Pelimannintie. The new route is Näyttelijäntie – Kantelettarentie – Kanneltie – Soittajantie – Klaneettitie – Pelimannintie.

The buses are orange in color and they have open fare collection, which means passengers can board the buses through all doors. At weekends, route 40 will run nearly round the clock.
Bus route 41 will be rerouted to replace the withdrawn section of route of bus 40 to Pohjois-Haaga station. Bus 41 will turn from Näyttelijäntie to Pohjois-Haaga station. Trunk bus route 40 will serve Pelimannintie. The route of bus 41 will also change in Etelä-Haaga: the bus will run via Haaga roundabout to Riistavuori and Tunnelitie. The rerouted bus 41 will continue to provide a direct link from Haaga to Kamppi and from the city center to Riistavuori.
Bus route 52 will be turned into a frequently running crosstown route serving West Helsinki. The route will provide new links to trains and other trunk routes services. The new route is Otaniemi – Munkkiniemi – Huopalahti station – Kannelmäki – Kuninkaantammi. The new route route will run every day and it will replace the weekday bus service 552.
Trunk bus route 550 and the weekday service 53 (Arabia – Oulunkylä – Pohjois-Haaga – Pitäjänmäki – Uusmäki) will serve journeys from Haaga to Maunula and Oulunkylä.
At first, bus route 52 will follow the current route via Palokaivon aukio on Etelä-Haaga. Bus routes 52 and 550 will start running via the Eliel Saarisen tie tunnel, i.e. they under the Huopalahti station, sometime in winter 2021.
Bus route 51 will be withdrawn. It will be partly replaced by the new route 53 mentioned above. Journeys from Haaga in the direction of Kallio and Hakaniemi will in the future require transfers, e.g. at Töölöntulli. Read more about the withdrawal of bus route 51 in the Frequently asked questions.
Bus route 63 will no longer serve Haaga. The bus will turn from Ruskeasuo to Hakamäentie, from where it will continue via the new Postipuisto area to Paloheinä. Alternative service is provided by buses running along Hämeenlinnanväylä and by the new trunk bus route 40 running along Tunnelitie and Kauppalantie. Walking distances to the closest stop will increase for most residents but will, however, remain reasonable. Service frequency from the replacement stops is higher. Bus route 42, Kamppi – Kannelmäki, will continue to run as currently. The service hours will be slightly extended on weekend evenings and Sunday mornings, improving links to the Meilahti Hospital.
The service frequency and operating hours of neighborhood routes 31, 32 and 36 will be reduced to save costs.

Kuninkaantammi will be served by the frequently running bus crosstown route 52 (Kuninkaantammi – Kannelmäki – Huopalahti station – Huopalahdentie – Otaniemi), instead of route 43. Bus route 52 links with trains at Kannelmäki and Huopalahti stations.
The previous direct but circuitous bus route 43 to Helsinki city center will be withdrawn. Links to, for example, Huopalahti station will improve. Bus route 52 will start running via the Eliel Saarisen tie tunnel, i.e. under the Huopalahti station, in winter 2021.
Kuninkaantammi will continue to be served by trunk bus route 560. At night time, the area will be served by regional bus route 436N, which will be rerouted to run via Perhekunnantie and Kuninkaantammi.

There will be changes to crosstown bus routes in Helsinki. Light rail line 550 (Jokeri light rail line) set to start running in 2024 affected the planning of crosstown bus routes. Trunk bus route 550 will run until the launch of the light rail line.
The revamped bus route 52 and bus routes 56, 57 and 59 will form a clear basic crosstown service that supplements crosstown trunk bus routes 500, 510, 550 and 560.
Bus routes 50, 51 and 552 will be withdrawn. They will be replaced by the more frequent services mentioned above and by the new weekday service 53. Some currently direct journeys will require transfers in the future.
Bus route 52 will be turned into a frequently running crosstown route serving West Helsinki. The route will provide new links to trains and other trunk route services. The new route is Otaniemi – Munkkiniemi – Huopalahti station – Kannelmäki – Kuninkaantammi. Bus route 52 will run every day and it will replace the weekday bus service 552. Bus route 553(K) will continue to run between Malmi and Maunula.
Bus routes 52 and 550 will start running via the Eliel Saarisen tie tunnel, i.e. under the Huopalahti station, in winter 2021.
Bus route 53 is a new weekday crosstown service. The bus will run from Arabia via Oulunkylä, Pohjois-Haaga and Pitäjänmäki to Uusmäki. The new route will partly replace the withdrawn service of route 52 between Arabia, Oulunkylä and Maunula, as well as the withdrawn route 51 between Metsälä, Pohjois-Haaga and Konala. In Uusmäki, route 53 will replace route 38, which will be withdrawn.
The terminus of bus route 59 will move from Pajamäki to Malminkartano, where route 59 will replace the withdrawn route 51. At peak times, the bus will run every 7-8 minutes and it will also run on Sundays.
Bus routes 56 and 57 will also start running more frequently. The buses will run every 10 minutes also during the daytime Monday to Friday.
Bus route 50 will be withdrawn and services will be concentrated on bus route 59. Rerouted buses 23 and 63 will provide alternative service northward from Ilmala; the buses are rerouted via Postipuisto to Maunula.
Bus route 51 from Kallio to Malminkartano will be withdrawn. The new route 53 will provide alternative service from Metsälä to Konala. Journeys from Pohjois-Haaga to Kallio will in the future require transfers. Trunk bus route 40 links with tram 3 at Töölöntulli. Alternatively, passengers can change from trunk bus route 550 to bus routes 66 and 67 running along Mäkelänkatu in Maunula or to bus route 23 in Pirkkola. There will be two minor changes to bus route 506: the bus will start running via Viikinmäki and Pihlajisto, providing new crosstown links. Viikintie and Tilanhoitajankaari will no longer be served.
Ther terminus of bus route 506 will move from the Meilahti Hospital area to Invalidisäätiö in Ruskeasuo. The change will provide new direct links from the northern end of Mannerheimintie to e.g. Pasila. The Meilahti Hospital will continue to be served by frequently running crosstown bus services, e.g. from Tukholmankatu to Pasila.
Bus route 23 will no longer serve Ruskeasuo. The bus will be rerouted to run from Ilmala via Postipuisto to Pirkkola, replacing the withdrawn route 50.

Two bus routes will serve the new Postipuisto area from the fall: 23 (Rautatientori – Alppila – Pasila – Postipuisto – Maunula – Pirkkola) and 63 (Kamppi – Ruskeasuo – Postipuisto – Maunula – Paloheinä).
Bus route 66K will be withdrawn and all services will be operated under route number 66 along Tuusulanväylä. Bus routes 23 and 63 will run via Männikkötie and Metsäpurontie every day.
The rerouted bus 23 will replace the withdrawn route 50 between Ilmala and Pirkkola. Bus 23 provides good interchange with other public transport services at Pasila station. The bus runs also at weekends, improving transport links from Maunula and Postipuisto to Pasila. The new route of bus 23 will also serve Kallio and Hakaniemi, replacing bus 51.
Bus route 63 will link the new Postipuisto area to Mannerheimintie.
Crosstown bus route 51 will be withdrawn. Bus route 52 will be rerouted and it will no longer serve Maunula. These bus routes will be replaced by a new weekday service, 53, (Arabia – Oulunkylä – Metsälä – Maunula – Pohjois-Haaga – Pitäjänmäki – Uusmäki).
Bus route 552 will be withdrawn. Bus route 553(K) will provide links to Malmi, trunk bus route 550 and the new route 53 will provide links to the west.

Invalidisäätiö will continue to be served by a direct bus service from Pasila station, but journeys from the city center will require transfers either at Pasila station or on Mannerheimintie. The Meilahti Hospital will continue to be served by frequently running crosstown bus services running along Tukholmankatu.
Bus route 23 will be rerouted to run from Ilmala via Postipuisto to Pirkkola. Bus route 59, which will start running more frequently, will provide links from Pasila to Ruskeasuo.

The terminus of bus route 506 will move from the Meilahti Hospital area to Invalidisäätiö in Ruskeasuo. The change will provide new direct links from the northern end of Mannerheimintie to Pasila.
The Meilahti Hospital will continue to be served by frequently running crosstown trunk bus routes 500 and 510 from Tukholmankatu to Pasila. In addition, the walking distance to the closest stop for route 506 at Töölöntulli will remain reasonable.

Frequently asked questions
There will be no bus services to Hernesaari from August 2021 following the rerouting of bus 14 and the withdrawal of bus route 18N. Bus route 17 was withdrawn in June 2021 when tram route 6 was extended to Eiranranta. Tram 6 will be further extended as Hernesaari becomes more built up. In the meantime, there will be no public transport services to southern Hernesaari. On the other hand, the demand for public transport in the area has significantly decreased and will continue to decrease as businesses operating in the area relocate or close. Unfortunately, it is not possible to maintain services for a very low number of passengers, in particularly in the current economic situation where we need to readjust transport services across the HSL area. Cruise passengers are served by tram 6, as well as by shuttle buses provided by the cruise lines and Hop On/Hop Off tourist buses.
The route change for bus route 24 approved by the HSL Executive Board on 14 April 2020 is based on the exceptional situation caused by the coronavirus epidemic, which has cut deeply into HSL’s ticket revenue. HSL needs to find cost savings over the next few years to balance its finances. We try to target savings on routes with low demand and with higher than average costs per passenger, as well as to areas with sufficient alternative services. On bus route 24, the operating cost per boarding has been about 70 percent higher than on Helsinki internal bus routes on average.
In addition to the route change, the operating hours and service frequency of the route will be reduced especially in the winter timetable season when there are fewer passengers going to Seurasaari and Hietaniemi than during the summer moths.
Based on the Helsinki crosstown route network development plan, bus route 33 was due to be extended from Munkkivuori to Etelä-Haaga, but the extension will not be implemented to save costs. Journeys from the western parts of Ulvilantie and Talinranta to Haaga will in future involve changing buses.
Bus route 14 is rerouted and renumbered (new route 25). Pajamäki will continue to be served by a direct service to the city center (to Kamppi), but the peak-time service frequency will be reduced. However, the service will be frequent enough to meet the demand in Pajamäki as even in the morning peak, there are currentely on average ten passengers per service. In addition, Pitäjänmäentie and the Tali allotment garden stop is only a short walk from Pajamäki. The stop is served by routes 30 and 200 to the city center, by route 59 to Pasila, as well as by trunk bus route 550 (and in the future by the Jokeri light rail line) to both Espoo and East Helsinki. As a large part of passengers on the current route 14 will switch to the new trunk bus routes, passenger load on bus route 25 is likely to reduce. In Kamppi, bus 25 will not depart from the same place as the trunk bus routes. It will depart from the Kamppi bus terminal, while trunk bus routes 20 and 30 will depart from Fredrikinkatu. This means that bus 25 will mainly be used by people who cannot get to their destinations by the trunk bus routes.
Bus route 63 has served the area on the eastern edge of Haaga, running along Nuijamiestentie to Maunula and Paloheinä. The number of passengers boarding the bus on Nuijamiestentie has been relatively low because there are no houses on the east side of the street and on the west side, the stops for buses running through the center of Haaga are nearby. Passengers can also use the frequent bus services running along Hämeenlinnanväylä. When bus 63 is rerouted to run via northern Pasila and the new Postipuisto area, no replacement service will be provided to Nuijamiestentie because the frequently running trunk route bus 40 will run through Haaga and the stops for the route are approximately 400 meters walk from the eastern edge of Haaga. In addition, passengers can use the buses running along Hämeenlinnanväylä.
In the route network plan for Haaga, we proposed that the route of bus 33 would be extended to the east part of Haaga. However, we had to abandon this plan due to the drop in passenger numbers and ticket revenue as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Neighborhood routes 31 and 32 serve the east part of Haaga during the daytime on weekdays.
In the Helsinki Crosstown Route Network Development Plan, a number of old crosstown bus routes are replaced by new, frequently running crosstown services 52, 56, 57 and 59. These bus routes serve several important transport hubs where they connect with other frequently running services. Crosstown bus routes 52, 56, 57 and 59 will run from morning to evening mainly every 10–15 minutes, at peak times even more frequently. Due to limited funding, some current bus routes have to be withdrawn or replaced by indirect bus services.
As the route of bus 51 is too long and slow, other bus routes are faster alternatives for many journeys. In addition, the passenger load on the route varies a lot and on some sections of the route, there are only a few passengers. There will be several changes to transport services within the service area of route 51 that improve public transport links and provide good alternatives for route 51. For example, passengers will be able to travel from Pohjois-Haaga to Kallio using the new trunk bus route 40. Bus 40 links with tram 3 at Töölöntulli. Commuter trains also provide fast and frequent transport links. Bus routes 53, 56 and 59 also provide alternative service.
Bus route 43 will be withdrawn in August 2021. Although the direct service provided by the route is withdrawn, the number of bus services in Kuninkaantammi will increase because bus route 52, which is extended to Kuninkaantammi, will run more frequently than bus route 43.
Currently, the fastest connection from Kuninkaantammi to the city center is bus 560 and change to I train at Myyrmäki station. Bus route 52 will link with trains at Kannelmäki and Huopalahti stations and also provide a direct link to the Kaari shopping center, Munkkivuori and Otaniemi. The fastest connection to Meilahti and Töölö will be taking bus 52 to the Perhekunnantie stop and changing to bus 42. With a slightly longer walk, passengers going to Meilahti can get one of the buses running along Hämeenlinnanväylä, which mainly run every 5 to 10 minutes (from the Kaarelantie stop).
A direct bus link from Kuninkaantammi to the city center will be reinstated once a new intersection on Hämeenlinnanväylä is completed and bus route 431 is rerouted to run via Kuninkaantammi.
The withdrawal of bus route 43 will also affect night bus services in Hakuninmaa and Kuninkaantammi. At first, night time service will be provided by bus route 436N, which will run every 60 minutes from Elielinaukio via Hämeenlinnanväylä to Perhekunnantie, from where it will continue via Hakuninmaa and Kuninkaantammi to Myyrmäki and Kalajärvi. The night-time journey time from the city center will be reduced thanks to the more direct route. However, the bus will run less frequently than bus 43. Passengers can use bus services running along Hämeenväylä also at night. Later (according to current estimates in fall 2022), new regional bus routes will be start running along Hämeenlinnanväylä. A new night bus route, 431N, will start running from Elielinaukio via Kivistö to Helsinki Airport. The bus will run every 30 minutes and serve also Hakuninmaa and Kukinkaantammi.
From August 2021, Invalidisäätiö in Ruskeasuo will be served by bus route 506, which will replace bus route 23. The terminus of bus route 23 will move to Pirkkola. The journey time of route 23 from Ruskeasuo to the city center is mostly between 30 and 35 minutes. In many cases, indirect journeys are faster than journeys made by bus route 23. There are frequent bus and tram services running along Mannerheimintie, which is accessible by foot for most Ruskeasuo residents. Bus route 506 will provide good transport links from Ruskeasuo to Pasila, from where it is easy to continue by train, bus or tram, or even by long-distance trains to other parts of Finland. Passengers can also change from bus 506 to buses going in the direction of the city center at stops on Mannerheimintie.
